What is the VirtualBox Extension pack?

An extension pack is an add-on in which you can install your main OS in order to use the extra features it provides. Here are some of the plus points that you will have after the installation of the extension pack on Ubuntu.

1: USB 2.0 & 3.0 Support

This feature allows users to use devices (like the mouse, keyboard, webcam..) that have USB 2.0 or 3.0 to connect and use in their guest OS. In addition, you will also be able to use devices with much-improved performance on your guest OS.

2: Host web-cam pass-through

Suppose you have a webcam whose drive is only available for Windows, and not for other OS. Since you want to use it on your guest OS, now using this feature you can use that webcam in your guest OS without having to install its driver.

3: Disk image encryption

If you are concerned about the security of your data, then don’t worry because this feature encrypts your data with the AES algorithm. Not only this feature encrypts data on your system but also when you move them too.

4: VirtualBox Remote Desktop Protocol (VRDP)

With the new VRDP feature, you can access your Virtual machine remotely through Virtualbox Interface even if you don’t have any direct connection to your VM. Although you should have a connection with the host machine in order to use this feature still it is quite a handy feature.

Intel PXE Boot ROM

Now you can boot a VM using an emulated PXE boot ROM (Random access memory) to install an operating system. Remember first you have to configure the PXE boot file then you will perform the installation.
