Create Bootable macOS Mojave USB Installer

Are you considering creating a bootable USB installer of macOS Mojave? Well, here I am going to show you two of the easiest methods to create a bootable macOS Mojave USB installer.

Why you should use a Bootable USB Installer?

Since there are different methods you can apply to install macOS Mojave on your Mac system. Like you can use a DVD which is good but not convenient because it takes longer as compared to USB.

In the current time, there is also a minor chance of getting your hands on a DVD too. So, the most convenient way of installation of macOS Mojave is to use a USB installer. Not only does this speeds up the installation time but also decreases the risk of damaging the disk too.

For creating a USB installer of macOS Mojave, we are going to use two different methods.

  • We will either use Terminal.
  • Or we are going to use third party tools as UniBeast Application.

NOTE: if you are not familiar with Terminal and don’t have a good idea of how it works. Then it is recommended to go with the second method. Please note that to create a bootable USB desk you will need a USB drive of at least 8 GB storage. 

So, let’s get started!

Method 1: Using Build-in Terminal for Mojave USB Installer

To create a bootable macOS Mojave USB installer, you must first download the latest macOS Mojave file from the App Store or use this direct link. However, if you already have a copy of macOS Mojave skip this step and follow the procedures below.

Erase Your USB Drive

Plug the USB drive into your system, then open SpotLight by pressing Command+Space keys. Search for the Disk Utility then press Enter key.

Choose your USB drive in Disk Utility and then Erase it as follows:

  • Name: macOS Mojave
  • Format: Mac OS Extended Journaled
  • Scheme: GUID Partition Map

Drop the Downloaded macOS Mojave File in Applications Folder

To do so, find the downloaded macOS Mojave file where you downloaded and open the Finder and drop it in the Applications folder.  However, if it is already placed in the applications folder you don’t need to do it again.

Create Bootable USB driver Via Terminal

Press Command+Space keys to open Spotlight and search for Terminal, press Enter to open it. Type the “Sudo ” on Terminal.

Note: The complete Terminal command for this purpose is provided right at end of this method (create bootable macOS Mojave USB installer via terminal). If you are having any sort of difficulty, I highly recommend you approach those commands.

Now open the Finder window and go to the applications folder where you placed the “macOS Mojave file”. Then right-click on “macOS Mojave file” and select “Show Packages Contents”. Open up “Contents” then “Resources” and locate create install media. You may see it like (createinstallmedia)

Drag and drop the create install media file anywhere on the terminal window then type “- -volume ”.

Now head back to your desktop and press Command+Shift+G to open the Go to Folder window then type “/volumes” and press Enter.

Drag your USB desk and drop it on the terminal window and press Enter. Enter your administrator password on the terminal and press Enter key.

Now to continue simply type “Y” on the terminal window and press Enter key. Soon your USB drive will have been erased, then the macOS will be copied to the USB.

Your command on your Terminal should look something like the command below:

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Mojave beta.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia –volume /Volumes/Untitled

Method 2: Create bootable macOS Mojave USB Via Unibeast:

Erase Your USB Drive

The first thing you need to do in this method is to format your USB drive. Therefore, plug your USB disk into your system and press the Command+Space keys to open SpotLight. Then search for the Disk Utility and press Enter.

Select your USB drive in Disk Utility and then Erase it with the properties below:

  • Name: Mac OS Mojave
  • Format: Mac OS Extended Journaled
  • Scheme: GUID Partition Map

Download macOS Mojave

Now you need to download macOS Mojave. Once downloaded then you will drop the macOS Mojave file in the Applications Folder.

Download UniBeast App

In order to download UniBeast, you will need to create an account via your email account if you already do not have any. Then go to the download section and make sure to download the UniBeast latest version. UniBeast App: Download Link

Create the USB

Run the UniBeast application and run it. Here you are going to click on Continue and will agree with terms and conditions by the app. In the Select Destination, window chooses your USB drive and click on the Continue button.

Now in the Select OS installation window choose macOS Mojave and click on Continue. In case, you didn’t see the macOS Mojave icon make sure to drop the downloaded Mac OS Mojave file in the Applications Folder as mentioned before.

Select UEFI Mode in the Boot-loader Configuration. But If your computer does not support UEFI then go for the second option (Legacy boot mode). Then click Continue to proceed.

In the Graphic Optional Configuration window, select the proper graphic card configuration according to your computer. In my case, I have selected Inject NVidia. Then click on Continue.

The last step is to check and verify your installation. Therefore, click Continue. Then you will be required to enter your Administrator password and select OK. The procedure will be.

It may take a while till the process is completed. So, make sure not to unplug the USB flash disk or turn off your system.

In Addition, after the bootable Mac OS Mojave USB is created, restart your system and press the Alt or Option key then select install Mac OS Mojave to begin the installation.

Last thoughts:

In conclusion, to create a bootable macOS Mojave USB installer drive you can use build-in Terminal or third-party applications. and indeed, using a third-party application is easier.
